Instructions

Based on the lesson about words and phrases, identify the prepositional, gerund, and participle phrases in the sentences below. Write the types of phrase verb in the blank space provided.

A sentence may have more than one phrase or prepositional phrase.

Example

Sentence: Tired of waiting, the man wearing the suit complained to John.

Answer: (3 phrases)

Absolute phrase: tired of waiting

Gerund phrase: wearing the suit

Prepositional phrase: to John

Note. It is okay if you can identify the phrases but are having trouble naming them. It is more important to identify the parts of the sentence than to be able to remember grammar terms.

3. The tornado hit the downtown area, causing millions of dollars in damage.

Phrase(s):

Absolute phrase: causing millions of dollars in damage

Prepositional phrase: of dollars

Prepositional phrase: in damage

4. It takes the Earth 365 days to go around the Sun once.

Phrase(s):

Prepositional phrase: around the sun

5. The skier fell off a short cliff, breaking his leg in the process.

Phrase(s):

Absolute phrase: breaking his leg in the process

Prepositional phrase: in the process
