Based on this lesson, use the appropriate coordinating conjunction and punctuation to complete the blanks in the sentences below. Some items may have more than one correct answer.

Coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet.

Make sure to use the correct punctuation where needed.

6. It rained all weekend we still had fun on our 4th of July trip to the lake.

It rained all weekend, but we still had fun on our 4th of July trip to the lake.

It rained all weekend, yet we still had fun on our 4th of July trip to the lake. (This sentence sounds very formal because it uses “yet.”)

7. The flight was miserable. There was a terrible storm the plane was delayed for two hours. I hadn’t slept well the night before I was exhausted. John felt sick the whole time the children were restless. We were all very happy when the plane finally landed.

... There was a terrible storm, so the plane was delayed for two hours.

... There was a terrible storm, and the plane was delayed for two hours.

… I hadn’t slept well the night before, so I was exhausted.

John felt sick the whole time, and the children were restless…

8. Where were you this morning? I came by your office twice you were nowhere to be found. You didn’t answer your phone did you reply to my text messages.

9. The researchers had to cancel the study they could not find enough volunteers for the experiment.

10. I didn’t go to the grocery store yesterday we don’t have much to eat at home. We can order pizza go out to eat.

I didn’t go to the grocery store yesterday, so we don’t have much to eat at home…

… We can order pizza or go out to eat.
